DHSC sets up England-wide system to monitor medicines errors

What can be learned about medicines errors from linking primary care and admissions data?

A system designed to monitor medication errors and to enable their causes to be studied has been announced by Department of Health and Social Care officials.

NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) has published the first of a series of indicators online.

This links primary care prescribing data to hospital admissions, and shows the regions where gastrointestinal bleeds have occurred in patients prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory treatments without also being prescribed gastro-protective treatment.

Further indicators covering more medicines and associated conditions are to be released later in the year.
