Health service staffing boosted to aid transformation in Northern Ireland

Will workforce strategy achieve real change in Northern Ireland?

Northern Ireland’s Health Department has unveiled its health and social care workforce strategy with the backing of £15m investment.

The strategy aims to deliver a workforce to meet the requirements of a transformed health and social care system, and to tackle recruitment and retention challenges.

The initial investment of £15m, part of the £100m 2018/19 transformation budget, is intended to boost the key transformation goal of developing ways of working across health and social care.

Health department permanent secretary Richard Pengelly said that solving Northern Ireland’s health and social care workforce challenges was inextricably linked to transformation.
