Hospital and Theatre Access Programme

Theatre access: advanced

This course has been developed for anyone who may need advanced theatre access knowledge to further develop their awareness of behaviours and risks, so that an appropriate response is given. It is intended this will reduce the risk to the patient, the representative and the company and avoid harm to all. The course is appropriate for England.

Structure

Two part module and a twenty question exam.

  • Describe recent advances in surgical technology
  • Recognise the likely changes in healthcare procurement and trust procurement management requirements when introducing new products or product trials
  • Understand the Bribery Act 2010
  • Describe the tendering process
  • Recognise the need for patient consent related to surgery
  • Recognise the basic safe perioperative behaviours
  • Identify new activities to reduce healthcare-associated Infections (HAIs) specific to the perioperative area and to medical devices
  • Demonstrate up-to-date information relating to screening patients and visitors for methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
  • Understand the development of patient safety awareness in UK healthcare
  • Describe the contents of the World Health Organization (WHO) surgical checklist and how it is being implemented in operating theatres
  • Describe a variety of surgical environments in which patients may be treated that are not hospitals
  • Describe reasons why services are increasingly being delivered ‘closer to home’
  • Describe the benefits of enhanced recovery programmes
  • Describe the patient’s role in the programmes
