Scottish Government moves to place more pharmacy teams in GP practices

Will pharmacy strategy enhance role of pharmacists in medicines management?

Leading pharmacists in Scotland have welcomed a new strategy that will see more pharmacy teams based in GP practices and an enhanced focus on safer use of medicines.

Achieving excellence in pharmaceutical care aims to transform the role of pharmacy and increase capacity, both in hospitals and in the community; it also wants pharmacy to make better use of digital information and technologies.

Specifically, the strategy sets out priorities including the commitment that every GP practice will have access to a pharmacist with advanced clinical skills by 2021.

Martin Green, chair of Community Pharmacy Scotland, said he was delighted that pharmacists’ core clinical services and skills would be developed and promoted over the next five years.
